48-V hybrid modules, in which the electric motor is not integrated into the belt drive but between the combustion engine and the transmission in a P2 arrangement, offer a comparatively cost-effective way of further reducing CO2 and other emissions. AVL has investigated the potential in combination with a diesel engine and presents initial results.
The diesel engine represents an irreplaceable component for cost-efficient compliance with future CO2 fleet target levels, today and for the future. However, in addition to continuous further optimization of thermal combustion efficiency, electrification measures are necessary in order to run the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) within its optimum efficiency range and hence be able to further reduce CO2 emissions during real driving conditions.
