Impact of Engine Lubricant Volatility on Oil and Particle Emissions
- 37 Downloads
Lubricating oil is increasingly understood as a design element and is specifically adapted to the technical requirements of modern powertrains. In a joint project between Total and the APL Group, the characteristics of different lubricating oil formulations were investigated on a direct injection turbocharged gasoline engine with regard to emissions. New methods for the combination of dynamic measurement techniques and statistical analysis were applied.
The influence of the lubricating oil in a complex powertrain
Lubricating oil is an important factor in the reduction of emissions limited by legislation such as carbon dioxide. It may also have an impact on pollutants, especially particle numbers during RDE tests. The highly loaded bearings in the cranktrain and the complex tribosystem, consisting of piston, piston ring and cylinder liner, as well as the extension of service and oil change intervals have a significant influence on the lubricating oil formulation.
