Rolling Diaphragm for Cleaning Blow-by Gas

Stricter requirements for blow-by gas cleaning, de-throttling of the intake tract and the use of low-viscosity engine oils push classic passive oil separators in passenger car engines to their physical limits. For this reason, Reinz-Dichtungs-GmbH from Neu-Ulm (Germany), a subsidiary of the US company Dana Incorporated, has developed an adaptive rolling diaphragm for more efficient blow-by gas cleaning.
Blow-by gas is created when combustion exhaust gas flows into the crankcase between the piston rings and the cylinder during expansion in the combustion cycle and entrains oil particles. To prevent the pressure in the crankcase from increasing further and causing damage, crankcase vents are used to direct oil-charged gas back into the intake tract. This makes cleaning the resulting aerosol indispensable. Otherwise the oil particles would deposit on engine components - including the throttle valve, turbocharger, intake valves and intercooler - and cause malfunctions...
