Friction Reduction in Power Cylinder Systems of Commercial Vehicle Engines

Due to US emissions legislation on greenhouse gas emissions for 2021 and 2024 and proposals for inventing a Euro-VII standard, the pressure on commercial vehicle engine manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions is increasing significantly. The efficiency of the engines has to be improved and the mechanical systems are addressed to reduce the related frictional losses. The trend toward new gear ratios for downspeeding of the engines makes this more difficult. The power cylinder system - consisting of piston rings, pistons and cylinder surface - plays a central role in terms of wear resistance and friction reduction.
The target of friction reduction leads directly to the Power Cylinder System (PCS), which accounts for a significant amount of friction in the base engine.
