Design of Coupled Planetary Gears

In the design phase of complex propulsion systems with several planetary gears, drive units and output machines, developers are faced with a complex optimization task when deciding on the concept, since the multidimensional, nonlinear solution space has many design- and process-influencing degrees of freedom. Within the framework of the master thesis "Development of a methodology for generating multi-coupled planetary gear trains including two input and two output shafts," awarded with the Hermann Appel Award of the IAV in the field of powertrain development in 2017, a methodology was developed which enables, as part of an optimization process, the automated search in the solution space for the most suitable drive concept. This article summarizes the main aspects of the design methodology.
