Federal-Mogul | Evaluating the Corrosion Behaviour of Cylinder Liners

Federal-Mogul Powertrain has developed a new test process to evaluate the corrosion resistance of cylinder running surfaces. The method is intended to allow a direct comparison of different materials and coating processes, so that material development can be specifically targeted at highly corrosive conditions such as those encountered when high-sulphur fuels and high levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) are used. In the newly developed evaluation method, the automotive supplier has reproduced test solutions based on condensates that form in engine operation, such as sulphuric, nitric and acetic acids. Checks include immersion tests in a boiling solution with an appropriate composition as well as an electrochemical investigation at temperatures close to the solution's flash point.
