1-Octanol Tailor-made Fuel for Lower Soot Emissions

Within the cluster of excellence "Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass" at RWTH Aachen University the alternative biofuel 1-octanol was identified as a particularly suitable candidate for use in diesel engines and extensively characterised in previous investigations. Due to the observed soot-free combustion behaviour the emission reduction potential of 1-octanol will be assessed in successive investigations as blend component with fossil diesel fuel. These investigations involve single-cylinder engine testing as well as tests using a series-production car. During these investigations high soot reduction could be observed even at low shares of 1-octanol.
