Cover Story
No one yet knows when electric motors will completely replace combustion engines. Equally, it is not possible to predict to what degree powertrains will be hybridized. Because of the market uncertainty, carmakers and their suppliers need to be able to offer all types of transmissions and powertrains. In the ATZ interview, Prof. Ferit Küçükay from the Technical University of Braunschweig explains why so many different powertrains are currently available and when a dual clutch transmission is a more suitable solution than a torque converter automatic transmission.
