Simulating Rain Water Guidance for a Better View

Besides the classical questions on aerodynamic forces, the aerodynamic development of a car's bodywork pays respect to the guidance of rain water over its surface. CFD simulations have been integrated in the development process for years in order to predict the principal aerodynamic characteristics of a car. In a current project, BMW and TU Darmstadt are using the increasing computational power for early consideration of water management with simulative estimations.

Investigations into Water Management

Car manufacturers invest a high effort to design the Exterior Water Management (EWM) of cars. EWM comprises every type of interaction of water with the vehicle. One EWM task is to ensure an unaffected view of the driver through the windows in every driving situation by active methods like windscreen wipers or passive methods like drain channels or water traps.
