Ethernet-based Network Architectures for Future Real-time Systems in the Car

New applications from the areas of advanced driver assistance systems, infotainment and in particular highly automated and autonomous driving foster the demand for high performance communication connections. This need cannot be satisfied with legacy technologies used in the automobile. The doctorate research presented in this article contributes to the design and assessment of new Ethernet-based in-vehicle networks and was published by Springer Vieweg. It was awarded with the IAV Talent Award in the category Excellence in 2018.

1 Continuously Growing Demands

The communication networks in automobiles changed significantly in the past decades. It started with discrete cabling and the first automotive field busses in the 1990s and went up to today's networks consisting of a variety of Electronic Control Units (ECUs).
