Die antiretrovirale Therapie hat das Langzeitüberleben von HIV-Infizierten enorm verbessert. Opportunistische Infektionen sind dadurch seltener geworden, COPD, Asthma und die seltenen Lungenfibrosen dagegen relativ häufiger. Trotzdem sind HIV-Kranke mit schlechtem Immunstatus besonders durch pulmonale Infektionen gefährdet.
