While there has been an overall trend toward LGBT acceptance in the U.S., with public attitudes changing dramatically in the last 20 years on various indicators related to LGBT issues, religious institutions have often been holdouts in their recognition of LGBT rights. Many churches and denominations refuse to ordain openly LGBT clergy and perform same-sex weddings and, in extreme cases, expel LGBT members. In his book Gay on God’s Campus: Mobilizing for LGBT Equality at Christian Colleges and Universities, Jonathan Coley addresses the intersection of religious institutions and LGBT rights by exploring the experiences, successes, and failures of LGBT activists at four Christian schools. Through extensive and rich interviews with sixty-five campus activists, Coley documents how they became involved in activism, what their time as a student activist was like, and how they changed both their schools and themselves.
