Differential expression of Sub1A loci in rice under submergence

Two rice land races (Meghi and Bhashakalmi) earlier reported to be submergence tolerant were experimented for differential expression of Sub1A loci under induced submergence with reference to FR13A and IR42 as tolerant and susceptible genotypes, respectively. Two weeks old seedlings were subjected to complete submergence for another 2 weeks and total transcripts were collected at the end of each week for expression study. Relative expression of the said loci was studied with respect to constitutive expression of Ubiquitin 5 for the studied lines. Up regulation of Sub1A loci relative to control was recorded for all the studied lines except IR42. Both the land races showed enhanced expression of Sub1A under induced submergence than IR42 but less than FR13A. After 7 days of complete submergence Meghi showed its higher expression than both FR13A and Bhashakalmi, which was not continued after 14 days as the expression of Sub1A in FR13A exceeded both the Meghi and Bhashakalmi. At the end of recovery period of 7 days, the expression of Sub1A were gradually decreased for all the genotypes. The expression profile of the tested landraces documented in this investigation support their superior submergence tolerance as recorded in our earlier report for physiological and biochemical screening under induced submergence.
