In Mexico, threatened species are protected under the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection (Ley General del Equilibrio Ecológico y Protección al Ambiente), the General Wildlife Law (Ley General de Vida Silvestre) and Official Mexican Standard (Norma Oficial Mexicana [NOM]) NOM-059-ECOL-2001, with the latter specifically listing endangered species in Mexico.

  2. The IWC is the international competent authority for the management of cetaceans. The IWC Scientific Committee is comprised of 2–300 international cetacean science experts.
