Abstract
The B319 aluminum alloy is an important material for automotive applications such as engine blocks, cylinder heads, and other powertrain parts. Grain refinement of this alloy has become an important strengthening mechanism for as-cast parts in particular. Common grain refiners for the B319 alloy include ceramics, such as TiB, TiC, and TiAl3. In this study, carbon was studied as an additive to achieve grain refinement of the B319 alloy. Carbon black, an amorphous and inexpensive form of carbon, was sintered with Al powder using spark plasma sintering to create master alloy pellets. Their effect on the B319 alloy’s as-cast grain size and mechanical properties was investigated. Also, the carbon black concentrations (1 and 2 wt%) in the master alloys were varied, and the effects was examined.
