Abstract
Introduction: Youth Health workers at secondary schools are confronted with adolescents with sleep reduction and school absenteeism. In this survey we search for a relation between sleep reduction and school absenteeism. Method: A cross sectional survey is done among fourth grade students in the Amstelland region in the Netherlands in school year 2013–2014. The research is done among 389 students. Sleep reduction is measured with a validated questionnaire (Chronic Sleep Reduction Questionnaire). An internet questionnaire (Elektronische Monitoring en Voorlichting) is used to collect information about health, well-being and lifestyle. Information about school absenteeism is provided by the schools. As outcome measures of school absenteeism we used sick leave, truancy and being in school too late. A linear regression is used to search for a relationship between sleep reduction and school absenteeism. Results: Univariate analyses show that with an increase of sleep reduction, truancy, sick leave and being in school too late also increases (respectively p = 0.032, p = 0.011, p < 0.001) The explained variance is small (respectively r2: 0.012, 0.017 and 0.056). In a multivariate model, which takes demographic features, psychological health, physical health and use of stimulants into account, the total explained variance increases, but the relation between sleep reduction and truancy and sleep reduction and sick leave are no longer significant. The relation between sleep reduction and being in school too late does not change (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.174). Conclusion: This survey does show a relation between sleep reduction and being too late in school for fourth grade students in secondary school. The relation between sleep reduction en truancy or sick leave is no longer significant after correction. Psychosocial problems are a strong explaining factor for school absenteeism and for sleep reduction. The results of this research are of relevance for the practice of the Youth Health Service, especially in terms of further strengthening of the psychosocial domain.
