Narratieve interventies verleiden tot gezonder gedrag

Gebruik verhalen met een focus op postintentionele factoren om de intentie-gedrag kloof te overbruggen

Gezondheidscommunicatie richt zich doorgaans op de vorming van intenties tot gezonder gedrag. De zogenaamde intentie-gedrag kloof laat echter zien dat de juiste intentie niet automatisch tot het voorgenomen gedrag leidt.1 Zo weten mensen die gezonder willen leven soms niet hoe deze intentie om te zetten in daadwerkelijk gedrag. Factoren als planning en het anticiperen op en omgaan met obstakels spelen hierbij een rol. Een narratieve communicatie-interventie leent zich bij uitstek voor het communiceren van dergelijke postintentionele factoren. Verhalen kunnen succesvolle strategieën om intenties in gedrag om te zetten concretiseren en hebben als bijkomend voordeel dat zij door de doelgroep als interessanter worden ervaren dan traditionele voorlichting en daardoor sneller de aandacht trekken en vasthouden. Daarnaast vergemakkelijken ze informatieverwerking, waardoor de boodschap voor een groter en breder publiek toegankelijk wordt. Dit maakt deze strategie met name interessant voor doelgroepen met een lagere sociaal economische status (SES) en gezondheidsgeletterdheid (‘health literacy’).

Abstract

Health behavior change: narratives for bridging the intention-behavior gap Health communication usually focuses on the formation of intentions to behave healthier. The so-called intention-behavior gap, however, shows that the right intention does not automatically lead to the intended behavior.1 People who want to live healthier, for example, do not always know how to put these intentions into practice; into actual behavior. Here, factors as planning and anticipating on and dealing with obstacles play an important role. A narrative communication intervention is in particular suitable for communicating such post-intentional factors; i.e. concrete strategies to convert intentions into actual behavior. Narratives have the advantage that they are perceived as interesting and, therefore, attract and keep the attention of the target audience more easily. In addition, they facilitate information processing, allowing the message to reach a wider audience – especially target groups with a lower socioeconomic status (SES) and health literacy. This unique combination of content (post-intentional factors) and genre (narrative format) holds great promise to increase the effectiveness of health communication and will be assessed within the transport sector: authentic stories should move truck drivers towards a healthier way of working and living.
