Concealed Carry: The Only Way to Discourage Mass School Shootings

Columbine, the Amish school shooting, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook Elementary, etc.: a parade of horrors. As educators, parents, and potential targets we want nothing more than to prevent such tragedies.

While there have been shootings at schools since the birth of the nation, between 1760 and 1989 most were motivated by unrequited love or revenge against a teacher or were the act of a child with poor judgment, all of which resulted in the deaths of one or two people—usually adults, but sometimes children. Since the 1990s, however, a different kind of crime has arisen, one exemplified by the Columbine shooting: a mentally unbalanced shooter or shooters, often teenage students of the school but sometimes adults, enter a school and shoot a large number of students or faculty, often randomly, and then shoot themselves. These are the crimes about which we, as a society, are most concerned.
