Advances in Asthma
Asthma is a major cause of morbidity in children accounting for the leading reason for visit to emergency room, absence from school and economic stress on families. In children it is not a single illness, but has multiple overlapping phenotypes.
In countries with high burden of infection, it still remains under diagnosed and children get inappropriate treatment in the form of antimicrobial agents and various cough syrups. In areas where infection is not so common, it is over diagnosed and treated with various asthma medications including nebulised medications and leucotriene antagonists.
With better understanding of pathophysiology of asthma over few decades, it has changed from a disease of bronchospasm to chronic inflammatory illness.
