To the Editor:
We read with attention the paper entitled “Efficacy of thermal ablation in benign nonfunctioning solid thyroid nodule: A systematic review and meta-analysis” written by Trimboli PP et al. and we found it rather well written and interesting. However, we disagree with some methodological aspects and part of the considerations reported in the paper and we assume that a few precisations are strongly deserved.
The authors claim that the study was addressed at obtaining a robust evidence on the effectiveness of thermal therapies in reducing the volume of benign thyroid nodules. The meta-analysis mainly results, however, in a comparison between the two most tested ablation techniques, laser (LA) and radiofrequency (RFA). A few of the conclusions that arise from the results presented in the paper seem questionable and need a clarification to prevent potentially misleading messages for clinical practice.
First of all, how do the authors explain the 12-month volume reduction...
