Résumé

L’annonce du handicap d’un enfant est un acte médical difficile, chargé de responsabilité, qui engage l’avenir. Pour les parents, l’annonce est un drame particulièrement douloureux, qui remet en cause leur capacité à donner naissance et élever un enfant normal. L’annonce elle-même suit un processus dynamique, qui mérite une formalisation minimale: elle justifie une préparation, un lieu adapté, propice à un échange suffisamment long qui permettra d’exposer le problème, de répondre aux questions et de faire des propositions concrètes. Le médecin doit montrer de l’empathie, de la compassion, de la disponibilité. Il doit écouter, s’exprimer simplement et avec précision, sans se réfugier derrière des mots techniques, et proposer un relais en vue d’une prise en charge globale et coordonnée.

Abstract

Telling parents that their child is handicapped is a very difficult medical act, heavily burdened with responsibility and a commitment to the future. For parents, it is a hugely painful drama, which throws doubt on their ability to give birth to and raise a normal child. Moreover, the announcement itself has its own dynamics and must be properly organized and prepared: in a suitable environment, the doctor must have time to explain why the baby or infant has poor health and disabilities, s/he must be able to answer the parents’ questions and offer practical and useful suggestions for the future. S/he must demonstrate empathy, compassion and availability. She must speak clearly and simply, avoiding technical terms.
