This book is the first of two volumes on potatoes in the Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science whose overall aim is stated as “bringing together key research on making the production of the world’s most important crops and livestock products more sustainable”. “Our aim is to build a foundation of knowledge on which researchers can build to meet the challenge of climate-smart agriculture.” In the Introduction it is stated that “Volume 1 reviews general developments in breeding, research on improving particular traits, from stress resistance to nutritional quality, as well the challenges facing potato cultivation in particular regions”. So how does the book measure up to these aims and to my expectations for a book on a major food crop, where there is a need to increase production and improve nutritional value for a growing world population during a period of climate change?
