IDT Featured Leader: Rita C. Richey

When Rita Carolyn Richey entered the freshman class at the University of Michigan in 1960, she hoped to become a journalist (Moseley et al. 2009). Thankfully for the Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) community, she turned her career aspirations toward education instead. As the first female to graduate from Wayne State University’s Instructional Technology doctoral program in 1971, Dr. Richey went on to lead the program until her retirement in 2008. For over 40 years, Dr. Richey has contributed to the growth, development, and understanding of IDT, through her research, publications, and mentoring of students, making her a true leader in the field.

Career Highlights

Graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1964, Dr. Richey worked as a teacher. She discovered that teaching was more difficult, but also more rewarding, than she had ever imagined (Moseley et al. 2009).
