The Arc of Love explores the nature of long-term romantic love, a topic especially worthy of attention today considering how technology is rapidly changing not only the norms that govern how we interact with each other, but also our values and expectations regarding romantic relationships. When roughly half of married couples get divorced, and many others engage in extramarital affairs, the very idea of sustaining a long-term monogamous relationship raises skepticism among many people who view this as not only unrealistic but even undesirable. Thus, the timing of this book is excellent.

The book delivers on its optimistic promise of showing us that enduring profound love is indeed possible, and it does so through an exhaustive characterization of empirical research on all kinds of loving (and not-so-loving) relationships. However, the heavy reliance on empirical data does weigh the book down, lending it an impersonal tone, and I was disappointed by the limited philosophical reflection...
