Elements of Capacity in Youth Development Nonprofits: An Exploratory Study of Urban Sport for Development and Peace Organizations

Abstract

Organizational capacity is often discussed among nonprofit practitioners and scholars. Yet, empirical research employing a multidimensional capacity framework remains scarce in the nonprofit literature (Andersson et al. in VOLUNTAS Int J Volunt Nonprofit Organ 27(6):2860–2888, 2016). Using a qualitative research approach, we explored capacity in a specific segment of youth development nonprofits—sport for development and peace (SDP). We were guided by three research questions: (1) what are critical capacity elements of SDP nonprofits? (2) how do these capacity elements influence the ability of SDP nonprofits to achieve their desired goals and objectives? and (3) what are the capacity needs of SDP nonprofits in the USA? Findings from in-depth interviews with leaders of 29 organizations contribute to the development of theory on nonprofit capacity by providing a more nuanced understanding of capacity strengths and challenges related to broader nonprofit goal achievement. For example, paid staff, revenue generation, and internal infrastructure emerged as critically more important for capacity in this context. Practical and theoretical implications are further discussed.

La capacité organisationnelle est un sujet souvent traité par les praticiens et savants du secteur sans but lucratif. Les recherches empiriques fondées sur un cadre multidimensionnel de la capacité restent toutefois peu nombreuses dans la littérature dudit secteur (Andersson et coll. 2016). À l’aide d’une approche de recherche qualitative, nous évaluons la capacité d’un segment précis d’organismes de développement des jeunes sans but lucratif, soit Sport for Development and Peace (SDP ou le sport pour le développement et la paix). Trois questions ont guidé nos travaux: (1) quels sont les éléments critiques de la capacité des organismes SDP? (2) comment ces éléments influencent-ils la faculté des organismes SDP à atteindre leurs objectifs et leurs buts? et (3) quels sont les besoins, en terme de capacité, des organismes de SDP sans but lucratif aux États-Unis? Les résultats d’entrevues détaillées menées auprès des dirigeants de 29 organismes contribuent à l’élaboration d’une théorie sur la capacité des organismes sans but lucratif, en dressant un tableau plus nuancé des forces et des défis associés à l’atteinte de leurs objectifs plus vastes. Par exemple, la rémunération du personnel, la génération de recettes et l’infrastructure interne se sont avérées largement plus importantes pour la capacité dans le présent contexte. Les implications pratiques et théoriques des résultats sont traitées plus en détail.

Die organisatorische Kapazität wird von Praktikern und Wissenschaftlern im Non-Profit-Bereich oft diskutiert. Jedoch werden in der Literatur zum Thema Gemeinnützigkeit empirische Forschungen, die ein multidimensionales Kapazitäts-Rahmenwerk anwenden, weiterhin nur selten behandelt (Andersson et al. 2016). Unter Anwendung eines qualitativen Forschungsansatzes untersuchten wir die Kapazität in einem spezifischen Abschnitt gemeinnütziger Organisationen für die Jugendentwicklung, nämlich im Bereich Sport für Entwicklung und Frieden (Sport for Development and Peace, SDP). Dabei leiteten uns drei Fragen: (1) Was sind die kritischen Kapazitätselemente für gemeinnützige SDP-Organisationen? (2) Wie beeinflussen diese Kapazitätselemente die Fähigkeit der gemeinnützigen SDP-Organisationen, ihre angestrebten Ziele zu erreichen, und (3) welchen Kapazitätsbedarf haben gemeinnützige SDP-Organisationen in den USA? Die Ergebnisse der ausführlichen Befragungen von Führungskräften aus 29 Organisationen tragen zur Entwicklung einer Theorie zur Kapazität gemeinnütziger Organisationen bei, indem sie zu einem differenzierteren Verständnis der Kapazitätsstärken und-probleme im Hinblick auf die weitreichendere Zielumsetzung gemeinnütziger Organisationen verhelfen. Zum Beispiel erwiesen sich bezahlte Mitarbeiter, Einnahmengenerierung und interne Infrastruktur in diesem Kontext für die Kapazität als ausschlaggebend. Praktische und theoretische Implikationen werden weiter diskutiert.

A menudo se habla de la capacidad organizativa entre los profesionales de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y los eruditos. Sin embargo, la investigación empírica empleando un marco de capacidad multidimensional sigue siendo escasa en el material publicad sobre las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro (Andersson et al. 2016). Utilizando un enfoque de investigación cualitativo, exploramos la capacidad en un segmento específico de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro para el desarrollo de la juventud - Sport for Development and Peace (SDP). Nos guiamos por tres preguntas de investigación: (1) ¿cuáles son los elementos de capacidad críticos de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro SPD? (2) ¿cómo influyen estos elementos de capacidad en la habilidad de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro SDP para lograr los objetivos y metas deseados? y (3) ¿cuáles son las necesidades de capacidad de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro SDP en los Estados Unidos?
