Abstract

In this research, the objective is to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of university students on the matter of sexual health. The research was descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample is comprised of the students from the İstanbul University Bakırköy School of Health and Hasan Ali Yücel Faculty of Education (N = 877). The survey form used for data collection includes questions on socio-demographic features, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of students on sexual health. In analyzing the data, averages and percentages are calculated and Chi-square tests are performed. The average age of the students in our study was 20.7 ± 1.718 years and only 39.0% of them had sufficient knowledge on sexuality. Analysis revealed that there were differences between men and women about their reported relationship with the opposite sex (p < 0.001), premarital sexual intercourse (p < 0.001), expectation of virginity from spouse (p < 0.001) and sexual preference (p < 0.001) were significant. We have concluded that university students’ sexual knowledge is insufficient, their behaviors and attitudes are influenced by traditional approaches and understanding of sexuality differs between two genders.
