Efficient removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution by chitosan-coated geotextiles based on polyethylene terephthalate

Abstract

Novel functionalized geotextiles were prepared through chemical functionalization of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) non-woven material by chitosan by using a coating technique with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as the cross-linking agent. The prepared functionalized geotextiles were characterized by using different surface analyses and they show that the chitosan was successfully coated on PET non-woven materials. The ability of the prepared geotextiles to remove some heavy metals (Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+) from the aqueous solution was also evaluated.
