This is a unique treatise on the economic, social and educational roles of teachers as instructors in two situations – as instructors in regular formal school, and as tutors outside of normal class time. Many unique contributions of this book are striking to me. The source of the analysis is a series of carefully designed one-to-one interviews with 68 teachers, 10 principals and 10 parents throughout Georgia, in Eastern Europe.1Although the qualitative analysis of teacher instructional practices was conducted in Georgia, the framework for the interpretation of teachers’ behaviours is set within broad theoretical domains. They include business markets, microeconomics, macroeconomics, sociology and educational policy. Consequently, the analyses and interpretation of teachers’ choices will interest researchers in the fields of education, economics and sociology in any country.
