This edited volume looks at International Large-Scale Assessments (ILSAs) from three perspectives. The book is one of several outcomes of an international seminar series on “The Potentials, Politics and Practices of International Educational Assessments” funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).1 The authors first look inside the “machinery” of assessment; then try to expand the assessment cycle beyond the direct work from data collection to release; and finally apply a wide international perspective.

The book is organised into three parts. Part one addresses methodological and theoretical challenges. It starts with Camilla Addey’s chapter entitled “Researching inside the international testing machine: PISA,2parties, midnight emails and red shoes”.
