Paulo Freire (1921–1997) is arguably the most written-about philosopher of education, critical pedagogue and educational revolutionary of the 20th century. Hundreds of books and thousands of articles spanning multiple languages have been devoted to his life, ideas and educational experiments. Can yet two more works by seasoned “Freirean” scholars published in the second decade of the 21st century add to the already prolific canon of Freire studies? In a word, yes. First Freire: Early writings in social justice education by Carlos Alberto Torres, and Paulo Freire by Daniel Schugurensky have brought fresh perspectives to the life and times of Freire while constructing the historical context, assembling the eclectic ideas, and reiterating the concepts conscientization, praxis and dialogue which give Freire such staying power.
