A group of 17 year old men stand in the dining hall of the high school where I research their gendered behaviors. They are “popular,” belonging to at least one of the school sports teams. Nonetheless, they dye and gel their hair, and argue about the best type of conditioner. Their t-shirts, a size too small, are worn to highlight their physiques, while low-slung trousers reveal their underwear—stylish fashion accessories with designer labels on show. This overtly sexualized presentation of the male body can increasingly be seen in high schools and on college campuses and sports teams across the US and Britain.
