Generic medicines in Pakistan: a questionable boon

We read with interest an article published recently in Pharmacy World and Science on consumers’ knowledge, perception, and attitudes regarding generic medicines in Auckland . The article  energized us to give a short comparative overview of generic medicines’ perceptions and attitudes in different classes and categories of consumers in New Zealand and Pakistan. This research letter also attempts to share our study experiences in which the contemporary issue of the underutilization of generic medicines in the Pakistani consumers was explored ). The site of the study was Karachi, which is considered to be a Mini-Pakistan as this cosmopolitan is representative of nearly all the ethnic and minority groups of the country . Moreover, internal migration from all around Pakistan, simply in search of better livelihood, is towards Karachi and therefore, these internal migrants find settlements in the peri-urban areas of city .
