A Reader of the Rose in Bruges

Fragments from the Roman de la Rose in a Middle Dutch Manuscript
  • Dirk GeirnaertEmail author

An early 14th-century account book, now kept in the Brugean State Archives, not only contains administrative and financial information in Middle Dutch, but also a collection of Old French excerpts taken from the Roman de la Rose. Found in a manuscript of which the contents allows us to gain a profound insight into the life and activities of its original owner, this florilegium adds to our insight into the milieux in which the Rose was read; the collection also illustrates the fact that the medieval way to read the Rose can often be characterized as a ‘lecture discontinue’. The excerpts are identified and edited.
