This special issue highlights some recent developments in the field of mathematical image analysis. The emphasis of the issue is on the interplay between advanced mathematical methods (such as non-smooth optimization, variational methods and regularization, statistics, inverse problems, partial differential equations) and their application to a variety of problems in image processing and computer vision, including denoising, restoration, edge detection, segmentation and registration. The special issue comprises nine papers which cover a wide range of topics in mathematical image analysis as outlined below.
  • Non-smooth optimization for imaging:

The paper “Accelerated alternating descent methods for Dykstra-like problems” (DOI: 10.1007/s10851-017-0724-6), by Chambolle et al., studies the acceleration of alternating minimization or descent schemes for strongly convex problems with two variables with a quadratic coupling. The authors have also investigated the case of partial descent...
