Pets and Peopleis a new collection of original essays released by Oxford University Press, edited by Christine Overall, herself a contributor. In the introduction Overall provides a brief lexicon of important terms used throughout the collection which should not to be skipped. While in the preface she describes how she came to edit the collection, at the behest of Jean Harvey who had been diagnosed with terminal leukemia. I remark on this because Jean Harvey is not only a contributor to this collection as well as the original editor, she was also a foremost thinker whose work is referenced consistently by the other contributors. It seems fair to say that many of these chapters could not have been written if it had not been for Harvey and a handful of other like minded moral theorists who noted the inadequacy of traditional approaches to explain the human-animal relationship, and worked to open up the field for further inquiry.
