Assessing students’ perception of parental career-related support: development of a new scale and a new taxonomy

The object of this study was to assess students' perceptions of their parents’ career-related behaviours and their influence on the students’ behaviours. In study 1 (528 students), we developed the SIL Scale (support, interference and lack of engagement), a nine-item questionnaire applied to educational and job contexts. In study 2 (1204 students), we tested a person-centred approach and developed a new model called the WID Types (willing, involved and in difficulty), which identifies three clusters of students. The associations between the clusters and career choice difficulties, level of career exploration and stage of the vocational choice confirmed its validity.

Evaluation de la perception qu’ont les étudiants du soutien parental concernant leur carrière: développement d’une nouvelle échelle et d’une taxonomie. L’objet de cette étude est d’évaluer la perception qu’ont les étudiants des comportements de leurs parents vis-à-vis de la carrière et de son effet sur leurs propres comportements. Dans l’étude 1 (528 étudiants), nous développons l’échelle SIL (soutien, interférence, manque d’engagement), un questionnaire à 9 items appliqué aux contextes de la formation et du travail. Dans l’étude 2 (1’204 étudiants), nous testons une approche centrée sur la personne et développons un nouveau modèle appelé le WID Types (prêt, impliqué et en difficulté), qui identifie trois groupes d’étudiants. Les liens entre ces groupes et les difficultés de choix de carrière, le niveau d’exploration professionnelle et l’étape du choix vocationnel confirment sa validité.

Der Gegenstand dieser Studie war das Erfassen von 1) der Wahrnehmung der Studenten des Elternverhaltens im Bezug auf Karriere und 2) deren Auswirkung (Wahrnehmung) auf das Verhalten der Studenten. In Studie 1 (528 Studenten) entwickelten wir die SIL-Skala (support - Unterstützung, interference - Einmischung, lack of engagement – mangelnde Beteiligung), ein im Bildungs- und Berufsbereich anwendbarer Neun-Item Fragebogen. In Studie 2 (1204 Studenten) testeten wir einen personenzentrierten Ansatz und entwickelten ein neues Modell, WID Types genannt (willing - gewillt, involved - beteiligt, und in difficulty – in Schwierigkeit), welches drei Cluster von Studenten identifiziert. Die Zusammenhänge zwischen den Cluster und Berufswahlschwierigkeiten, Berufserforschungs-Levels und Berufswahletappen, bestätigten die Validität dieses Modells.


La evaluación de la percepción de los estudiantes acerca del apoyo a la Carrera. Desarrollo de una nueva escala y taxonomía. El objeto de este estudio fue evaluar la percepción de los estudiantes sobre los comportamientos relacionados con la Carrera y su efecto en los comportamientos de los estudiantes. En el estudio 1 (528 estudiantes) desarrollamos la escala SIL (apoyo, interferencia, falta de involucración), un cuestionario de nueve ítems aplicado a contextos educativos y de trabajo. En el estudio 2 (1204 estudiantes), testamos una aproximación centrada en la persona y desarrollamos un Nuevo modelo denominado de tipos WID (WID types: willing, involved, and in difficulty; voluntad, involucración, en dificultad) que identificó tres clusters de estudiantes. Las asociaciones entre los clusters y las dificultades en la elección de Carrera, los niveles de exploración de la Carrera y el estadio de elección vocacional, confirmaron su validez.
