Investigating the professional identity dynamic in career counselling: The socioconstructivist interview

Abstract

A socioconstructivist method is used to investigate the professional identity dynamic of employees in the context of career counselling. This method is particularly well-suited because of the intrication, at the core of the client’s identity, of psychological dimensions, such as values and capabilities, which are essential to career counselling. Additionally, this approach allows one to contextualise these dimensions, as biographical and environmental references emerge to give meaning and relevance to representations of the self and others. We apply the multistage investigator of the social identity method to study two specific cases, and to illustrate the contribution of the socioconstructivist interview.

Examiner la dynamique de l’identité professionnelle en orientation de carrière: L’entretien socioconstructiviste. Dans le contexte de l’orientation de carrière, nous utilisons une méthode socioconstructiviste pour l’investigation de la dynamique de l’identité professionnelle des employés. Cette méthode est particulièrement appropriée pour sa mise en lien des dimensions psychologiques, comme les valeurs et les aptitudes, qui sont au centre de l’identité du client et essentielles à l’orientation. De plus, cette approche permet de contextualiser ces dimensions pour donner du sens et de la pertinence aux représentations du soi et des autres grâce à l’émergence des références biographiques et environnementales. Nous appliquons la méthode de l’identité sociale et son investigation par stades pour l’étude de deux cas spécifiques et pour illustrer la contribution de l’entretien socioconstructiviste.

Zusammenfassung

Untersuchung der professionellen Identitätsdynamik in der Laufbahnberatung: das soziokonstruktivistische Gespräch. Die soziokonstruktivistische Methode wird verwendet, um die berufsbezogene Identitätsdynamik von Arbeitnehmern im Kontext von Laufbahnberatung zu untersuchen. Diese Methode ist besonders gut geeignet, da sie auf den Kern der Identität eines Klienten fokussiert, der psychologische Dimensionen, wie Werte und Fähigkeiten umfasst, die essenziell in der Laufbahnberatung sind. Darüber hinaus erlaubt dieser Ansatz, diese Dimensionen zu kontextualisieren, da biografische und umweltbezogene Referenzen der Repräsentation des eigenen Selbst sowie anderer Sinn und Bedeutung geben können. Wir haben die mehrstufige Analyse der Methode der sozialen Identität auf zwei spezifischen Fällen angewendet, um den Beitrag des soziokonstruktivistischen Gesprächs zu verdeutlichen.

Investigando la Identidad Profesional Dinámica en la Orientación Profesional: La Entrevista Socio-constructivista. Se utiliza un método socio-constructivista para investigar la dinámica de la identidad profesional de los empleados en el contexto de la orientación profesional. Este método es especialmente adecuado debido a la importancia, en la identidad del cliente, de dimensiones psicológicas, como los valores y las capacidades, esenciales para la orientación profesional. Además, este enfoque permite contextualizar estas dimensiones, a medida que emergen referencias biográficas y ambientales para dar significado y relevancia a las representaciones del yo y de los demás. Aplicamos el método de investigación multietapas de la identidad social para estudiar dos casos específicos, y para ejemplificar la contribución de la entrevista socio-constructivista.
