Classifications of college students’ protean and boundaryless orientation to work
Abstract
Increasingly, individuals navigate their own careers in self-directed (protean) and boundaryless contexts. These concepts have been applied to adult employees but have seen limited application with young adults. Therefore, 205 college students were assessed on the Protean and Boundaryless Career Attitudes scales (Briscoe, Hall, and DeMuth, 2006); i.e., self-directed career management, values-driven, boundaryless mindset, and organizational mobility preferences. Scale items were reworded to focus on college experience. Cluster analysis organized respondents into five distinct protean-boundaryless career types. Three types were similar to those hypothesized for adults, while two types were unique to our sample.

La classification des orientations de travail protéennes et sans frontières d’étudiants universitaires. Les individus explorent de plus en plus leurs propres carrières dans des contextes protéens et sans frontières. Ces concepts ont été appliqués a des travailleurs.ses adultes mais n’ont vu que peu d’applications pour les jeunes adultes. Par conséquent, 205 étudiant.e.s universitaires ont été évalués selon les échelles des attitudes de carrière protéennes et sans frontières (Briscoe et al. 2006); soit le management de carrière autonome, le choix axé sur les valeurs, la mentalité sans frontières, les préférences de mobilité organisationnelles. Les items des échelles ont été reformulés en fonction du contexte universitaire. Une analyse par cluster a divisé les sujets en 5 catégories distinctes de carrière protéennes et sans frontières. Trois catégories étaient similaires à celles imaginées pour les adultes, et deux étaient propres à cet échantillon.
Zusammenfassung
Selbst-gesteuerte (Protean) und grenzenlose (Boundaryless) Laufbahnorientierung – eine Klassifizierung von Studierenden. In zunehmendem Maße navigieren Individuen ihre eigenen Laufbahnen selbstgesteuert und in grenzenlosen Kontexten. Die erwähnten Konzepte wurden vielfach auf erwachsene Mitarbeitende angewendet, aber nur begrenzt auf junge Erwachsene. Deshalb wurden anhand einer Stichprobe von 205 Studierenden die Protean- und Boundaryless Career Attitudes Skalen (Briscoe et al. 2006), welche beispielsweise selbst-gesteuertes Karrieremanagement, wertegesteuerte, grenzlose Denkweise und (Unternehmens-)Mobilitätspriorität erfassen, untersucht. Die Items wurden umformuliert, damit sie dem Erfahrungshintergrund der Studierenden entsprechen. Mit Hilfe einer Clusteranalyse wurden die Studierenden in 5 verschiedene selbst-gesteuerte und grenzenlose Laufbahntypen eingeteilt. Drei Typen entsprechen denjenigen, welche auch bei den Erwachsenen gefunden wurden, während zwei Typen einzigartig sind für die Stichprobe der Studierenden.

Clasificaciones de los estudiantes universitarios que cambian su elección de carrera y orientación ilimitada para el trabajo. Cada vez más crece el número de individuos que autodirigen la gestión de sus carreras (con cambios en sus decisiones) y en contextos ilimitados. Estos conceptos han sido aplicados en poblaciones de empleados adultos, pero han tenido una incidencia muy limitada con jóvenes. Por esta razón, 205 estudiantes universitarios fueron asesorados con el Protean and Boundaryless Career Attitudes escales de (Briscoe et al. 2006); i.e., autodirección de la gestión de carrera, valores en la conducción, ilimitados grupos mentales y preferencias de movilidad organizacional. Los items de la escala fueron reformulados para adaptarlos a la experiencia universitaria. Un análisis de racimo organizó a los sujetos que respondieron la escala en 5 tipos distintos. Tres tipos fueron similares a los esperados para los adultos, mientras que dos fueron únicos para los sujetos de nuestra muestra.
