The world of work between the personal and the collective: a demand for social justice and guidance for Latin America

Abstract

The struggle for justice has been permanent for a very long period of time. In this sense, it could be said that since Plato conceived it as one of the fundamental virtues, justice has constituted a goal to achieve for any society. In the case of justice, related to social aspects, the situation has been overwhelming in Latin America. Based on a literature review, this contribution aims at proposing to consider work, at least in Latin America, as an area at the intersection between the personal and the collective. Findings have indicated that work or employment cannot only be conceived for individual or personal benefits. It is therefore imperative and necessary that guidance professionals take into consideration the issue of social justice in their professional activities, in order to better address collective needs.

Résumé

Le monde du travail entre l’individuel et le collectif: Une revendication de justice sociale et d’orientation pour l’Amérique latine. La lutte pour la justice dure depuis de nombreuses années. En ce sens, l’on pourrait dire que, depuis que Platon l’a conçue comme l’une des vertus fondamentales, la justice a constitué un objectif à atteindre pour toute société. En ce qui concerne la justice, en lien avec les aspects sociaux, la situation de l’Amérique latine est accablante. Basée sur une revue de la littérature, cette contribution a pour but de proposer de considérer le travail, du moins en Amérique latine, comme un domaine se situant à l’intersection entre l’individuel et le collectif. Les résultats indiquent que le travail ou l’emploi ne devraient pas être conçus pour l’individu ou pour des bénéfices personnels. Il est ainsi impératif et nécessaire que les professionnels de l’orientation prennent en considération l’enjeu de la justice sociale dans le cadre de leurs activités professionnelles, afin de mieux répondre aux besoins collectifs.

Zusammenfassung

Die Welt der Arbeit zwischen dem Individuellen und dem Kollektiv: Eine Forderung nach sozialer Gerechtigkeit und Beratung für Lateinamerika. Das Ringen nach Gerechtigkeit ist seit einer sehr langen Zeit ein wichtiges Thema. So hat bereits Plato Gerechtigkeit als eine der fundamentalen Tugenden konzipiert und damit ein Ziel für jede Gesellschaft gesetzt. Im Falle von sozialer Gerechtigkeit ist die Situation in Lateinamerika überwältigend. Basierend auf einem Literaturüberblick ist das Ziel dieser Studie “Arbeit”, zumindest in Lateinamerika, als Überschneidungsbereich zwischen dem Individuum und dem Kollektiv zu betrachten. Die Ergebnisse wiesen darauf hin, dass Arbeit oder Beschäftigung nicht nur als individueller oder persönlicher Nutzen gesehen werden können. Daher ist es dringlich und notwendig, dass Berufsberater das Thema soziale Gerechtigkeit in ihrer beruflichen Tätigkeit berücksichtigen, um die Bedürfnisse des Kollektivs besser adressieren zu können.

Resumen

El mundo del trabajo entre lo personal y lo colectivo: una exigencia para la Justicia Social y la Orientación en América Latina. La lucha por la justicia ha sido algo permanente desde hace mucho tiempo. En este sentido, podría decirse que desde que Platón la concibió como una de las virtudes fundamentales ha sido un objetivo a alcanzar para cualquier sociedad. En el caso de la justicia, relacionada a los aspectos sociales, la situación ha sido preocupante en América Latina. Basándonos en una revisión de la literatura existente, esta contribución se `propone considerar el trabajo, por lo menos en América Latina, como un área de intersección entre lo personal y lo colectivo. Los resultados indican que el trabajo o empleo no puede ser solamente concebido para el beneficio individual o personal. Por consiguiente, es imperativo y necesario que los profesionales de la orientación tomen en cuenta los aspectos relacionados con la justicia social en sus actividades profesionales, para un mejor abordaje de las necesidades colectivas.
