Validity of Childhood Career Development Scale scores in South Africa

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to provide evidence of the construct and concurrent validity of the Childhood Career Development Scale’s (CCDS) scores among South African primary school children. Using a sample of 808 children in grades four through seven, evidence for the CCDS’s construct validity was provided using confirmatory factor analysis, with eight factors confirmed. Evidence for the CCDS’s concurrent validity was also presented by analyzing the relationship between subscales of the Childhood Career Development Scale and measures of self-esteem, locus of control, and children’s industry. The CCDS continues to emerge as a promising theoretically-driven assessment tool.

Résumé

La validité de l’instrument Childhood Career Development Scale en Afrique du Sud. L’objectif de cette étude est d’investiguer la validité de construit et la validité concourante de l’instrument Career Development Scale (CDDS) chez des enfants à l’école primaire en Afrique du Sud. Huit cent huit enfants de la quatrième à la septième année scolaire ont été interrogés. La validité de construit du CCDS est confirmée par des analyses factorielles confirmatoires avec huit facteurs confirmés. La validité concourante du CDDS est également confirmée par des analyses de la relation entre les sous-échelles du CDDS et différentes mesures : estime de soi, lieu de contrôle et application de l’enfant. L’instrument Childhood Career Development Scale se profile donc comme un instrument d’évaluation à base théorique prometteur.

Zusammenfassung

Validität der Skala zur beruflichen Entwicklung von Kindern in Südafrika. Der Zweck dieser Studie war es, Belege für die Konstrukt- und Übereinstimmungsvalidität der Skala zur beruflichen Entwicklung von Kindern (CCDS) bei südafrikanischen Kindern in der Primaschule zu liefern. Auf der Basis einer Stichprobe von 808 Kindern in der vierten bis siebten Klasse wurden Belege für die Konstruktvalidität der CCDS mittels konfirmatorischer Faktorenanalyse geliefert, wobei acht Faktoren bestätigt wurden. Belege für die konvergente Validität der CCDS wurden durch die Analyse der Beziehungen zwischen den Unterskalen der Skala zur beruflichen Entwicklung von Kindern und Messverfahren für Selbstvertrauen, Kontrollüberzeugungen, und Fleiss der Kinder präsentiert. Die CCDS stellt sich weiterhin als ein vielversprechendes theoriegeleitetes Testverfahren heraus.

Validez de la escala del Desarrollo de la Carrera de la Infancia en Suráfrica. El objetivo de este estudio fue proporcionar evidencia sobre la validez de constructo y concurrente de los resultados de la Escala del Desarrollo de la Carrera de la Infancia -EDCI (Childhood Career Development Scale-CCDS), entre niños y niñas de primaria sudafricanos. Tras aplicarla a una muestra de 808 niños de grados cuarto a séptimo, se obtuvo evidencia sobre la validez de constructo de la escala, aplicando un análisis confirmatorio, con ocho factores confirmados. La validez concurrente se ha comprobado analizando la relación entre las subescalas de la Escala del Desarrollo de la Carrera de la Infancia y las medidas de auto-estima, locus de control y el esfuerzo de los niños. La EDCI (CCDS) continua siendo un instrumento de diagnóstico con una base teórica sólida muy prometedor.
