Assessing the counselling needs of high school students in Kenya

The Student Counselling Needs Scale (SCNS) was administered to 867 participants recruited from high schools in Kenya. The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis yielding five factors: human relationships, career development, self development, social values, and learning skills were assessed. The findings highlighted the importance of using assessment instruments to identify students’ counselling needs in Kenya.

L’évaluation des besoins en conseil chez des étudiants de lycée au Kenya. L’outil Student Counselling Needs Scale (SCNS) a été administré à 867 participants recrutés dans des lycées au Kenya. Les données ont été analysées par analyse factorielle exploratoire qui a fourni cinq facteurs dont on a analysé la portée : relations humaines, développement de la vie professionnelle, développement de soi, valeurs sociales et habiletés d’apprentissage. Les résultats mettent en lumière l’importance de l’utilisation des instruments d’évaluation pour identifier les besoins en conseil des étudiants au Kenya.


Bewertung der Beratungsbedarfe von Schülern der Sekundarstufe II in Kenia. Der Fragebogen zu Beratungsbedarfen von Schülern (Student Counselling Needs Scale—SCNS) wurde 867 Teilnehmern aus Schulen der Sekundarstufe II in Kenia vorgelegt. Die Ergebnisse wurden mit einer Faktorenanalyse ausgewertet und lieferten 5 Faktoren: Zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen, Entwicklung der Berufslaufbahn, persönliche Entwicklung, soziale Werte und Lerntechniken wurden herausgefiltert. Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Wichtigkeit von Analyseinstrumenten zur Einschätzung der Beratungsbedarfe von Schülern in Kenia.


Evaluación de las Necesidades de Orientación de los Estudiantes de Secundaria en Kenya. La Escala de Necesidades de Orientación de los Estudiantes (SCNS) se aplicó a 867 participantes seleccionados de Institutos de Educación Secundaria en Kenya. Los datos se analizaron mediante un análisis factorial exploratorio que dio como resultado cinco factores: relaciones humanas, desarrollo de la carrera, auto-desarrollo, valores sociales, y habilidades de aprendizaje, que fueron evaluados. Los resultados resaltan la importancia de usar instrumentos de evaluación para identificar necesidades de orientación de los estudiantes en Kenya.
