Perception of career barriers: The importance of gender and ethnic variables

Abstract

Differences of gender and ethnicity were examined in terms of the perception of barriers to career development. The Perception of Career Barriers Inventory (IPBC) was administered to a sample of 457 ninth grade students in Portuguese state schools. Gender differences were found, with girls generally scoring higher and in particular on some specific scales. African ethnic participants score higher than Portuguese participants across all the IPBC scales. These findings are more obvious with African participants born in Africa than with those born in Portugal. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Perception des barrières de carrière: l’importance des variables de genre et des variables ethniques. Les différences de genre et d’appartenance ethnique sont examinées en termes de perception de barrières au développement de la carrière. Le Perception of Career Barriers Inventory (IPBC) a été administré à un échantillon de 457 élèves de neuvième année dans des écoles publiques portugaises. On a trouvé des différences de genre, les filles obtenant généralement des scores plus élevés, en particulier sur certaines échelles spécifiques. Les participants d’origine ethnique africaine obtiennent des scores plus élevés que les participants portugais sur toutes les échelles. Ces résultats sont plus nets pour les participants africains nés en Afrique que pour ceux nés au Portugal. On discute les implications de ces résultats pour la recherche et la pratique futures.

Zusammenfassung.

Wahrnehmung von Berufsbarrieren: Die Bedeutung von Geschlechts- und ethnischen Variablen. Geschlechtliche und ethnische Unterschiede wurden hinsichtlich der Wahrnehmung von Barrieren innerhalb der Berufsentwicklung mit einer repräsentativen Gruppe von 457 Schülern der 9.Klasse in staatlichen portugiesischen Schulen mit dem Inventar der Wahrnehmung von Berufsbarrieren (IPBC) untersucht. Es wurden Geschlechtsunterschiede gefunden, die im allgemeinen bei Mädchen und besonders bei speziellen Skalen höher ausfielen. Afrikanisch stämmige Teilnehmer haben über alle Skalen des IPBC höhere Werte als portugiesische Teilnehmer. Die Ergebnisse werden deutlicher sichtbar bei in Afrika geborenen Afrikanern als bei denen, die in Portugal geboren wurden. Folgerungen für die zukünftige Forschung und die Praxis werden diskutiert.

La Percepción de Barreras Profesionales: La Importancia de Variables Étnicas y de Género. Se examinaron las diferencias de género y etnicidad en términos de percepción de barreras u obstáculos al desarrollo profesional. Se aplicó el Inventario de Percepción de Barreras Profesionales (IPBP)—Perception of Career Barriers Inventory (IPBC)—a una muestra de 457 estudiantes de noveno grado en escuelas públicas portuguesas. Se encontraron diferencias de género, siendo en general más altas las puntuaciones de las chicas, sobre todo en algunas escalas específicas. Los participantes de origen africano obtuvieron puntuaciones más altas que los participantes portugueses en todas las escalas del IPBP. Estos resultados son más evidentes en los participantes de origen africano nacidos en África que en aquellos que han nacido ya en Portugal. Se ofrecen implicaciones para la práctica y para investigaciones futuras.
