We would like to thank George Ellis and Hermann Nicolai, the outgoing Editors in Chief. Under their leadership General Relativity and Gravitation made striking advances, reaching an impact factor of \(\sim \!\!2.54\).

Building on the tradition they established, the Editorial Board has decided to institute a number of new initiatives.
  • The scope of the journal has been updated to include areas that have moved to the forefront in recent years (see the journal’s aims & scope at www.springer.com/10714). The Editorial Board has been correspondingly extended.

  • The journal will now accept Letters. These are to summarize new results of interest to researchers whose primary interest lies in nearby areas for which the results are relevant, but who would typically not be interested in complete derivations, details of numerical simulations, etc. These Letters will have a page limit of 8 journal pages.

  • The journal will feature two types of invited reviews:
    1. (i)

Detailed status reports addressed to experts and researchers who would like to understand the subject thoroughly. The journal aims to feature about half a dozen of these each year. They will appear as “Invited Reviews: State of the Field.”

    2. (ii)

Shorter reviews, about 10–20 pages, which summarize key ideas to the readership in other sub-areas of gravitational science. These will appear as “Invited Reports: Introduction to Current Research.”

  • A few selected papers will be marked “Editor’s Choice”. The primary criteria will be original, high quality research that is of wide interest within the community.

  • The journal will continue to publish book reviews and “Golden Oldies” (GO). The focus of the GO series will continue to be on seminal papers—both well-known papers and ‘hidden treasures’ that are not as well known as they deserve to be. We would like to thank the GO Editor Andrzej Krasinski and the GO Advisory Board for their excellent work on this important series. The existing Advisory Board will be supplemented by one of the Editors in Chief, and final approval of GO editorials and articles will be through the Editors in Chief, as for all other articles in GRG. (This constitutes a revision to the rules for the GO publication as given in the GRG editorial by Krasinski, A. (2007) Gen. Relativ. Gravit. 39:1043–1045, DOI  10.1007/s10714-006-0308-z.)

  • Please note that the on-line version allows for colored figures and appropriate sound clips and movies, provided this accompanying material is judged by the referees as enhancing the quality and usefulness of the article to the intended readership. Authors of papers in numerical relativity and data analysis are especially encouraged to make use of this added feature.

We hope that these new initiatives will further enhance the usefulness of the journal. The new format of Letters, in particular, is not shared by other journals in the field and should enhance the communication between various sub-disciplines significantly. We encourage authors to use this avenue to increase the impact of their research by making the main results available to a wider community.
