Special Issue: Collaboration in e-Research

Recent innovations in research processes and the technologies that support them seem to offer the potential for revolutionary changes in the way that science is undertaken. These changes have occurred at a time when research practices that conform to conventional disciplinary and institutional structures are increasingly recognised as being inadequate to meet new scientific challenges. In the UK, the e-Science programme has suggested a way to address these challenges through the development of global, collaborative multi-disciplinary research communities that, in turn, rely upon the construction of more powerful computational, data and communication infrastructures.1
Thus, the e-Science vision is not only concerned with changing the dynamics of science but also with providing technologies that will facilitate the emergence of these new forms of scientific practice.
