Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is an important fruit crop in the family Rosaceae that is cultivated in many countries, including Japan and China. Both the fruit and leaves of this plant have long been used as a folk medicine, with the leaves having been reported to exhibit beneficial anticancer, anti-inflammation, antioxidant, and antidiabetic effects, as well as other bioactivities [1, 2]. Here, we investigated the chemical composition of loquat leaves.
Leaves of the loquat variety ‘Natsutayori’ were collected from trees cultivated at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture at Kagoshima University, Japan. The leaves were dried in the shade and ground into a fine powder. The powder (70 g) was then extracted three times with 70% MeOH. The crude extract was filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure, following which 18.2 g was suspended in dH2O and defatted with n-hexane three times.
