Composition of Essential Oils from the Leaves, Stems, and Flowers of Vernonia condensata of Pernambuco, Brazil

The genus Vernonia is one of the most numerous of the family Asteraceae, with approximately 1000 species distributed in tropical and subtropical countries [1]. Approximately 200 species are found in Brazil, occurring from the northern to the southern regions of the country [2]. V. condensata Baker, which is known locally as “aluma,” “seven pains,” and “bahian boldo,” is an abundant plant in the Quilombo community of Timbo in the municipality of Garanhuns and used as a folk remedy in the form of a tea made from the leaves and shoots for the treatment of ulcers, indigestion, pain, fever, and diarrhea [3, 4]. Due to its antiulcer property, this plant belongs to the Brazilian Pharmacopeia and is referenced in more than 2000 websites [5].

Studies on the biological activity of V. condensata reveal antioxidant [4], antitumor [6], anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive [7], and analgesic [8] properties. A previous phytochemical investigation of the leaves from V. condensatarevealed the presence...
