Secondary Metabolites from Branches of Eucommia ulmoides

Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. (Eucommiaceae), the sole species of the genus Eucommia, is also known as Du-zhong in Chinese. E. ulmoides has a wide distribution in eastern Asian countries, including China, Japan, and Korea [1]. The stem barks, leaves, as well as flowers of E. ulmoides have long been used in traditional medicine for preventing or curing diabetes, hypertension, impotence, lumbago, miscarriage, ischialgia, and nervous system disorders [2, 3, 4, 5]. Previous phytochemical studies of E. ulmoides were mainly concentrated on its barks, leaves, and flowers, which led to the isolation and characterization of various compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids, lignans, and iridoids [6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that compounds and extracts from E. ulmoides exhibited significant biological properties, especially for treating hepatic damage, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer′s disease, sexual dysfunction, aging, osteoporosis, and lupus-like syndrome [12, 13, 14, 15, 16...
