The MR multiloop research reactor is now being disassembled at the National Research Center Kurchatov Institute. A complex α-, β- and γ-spectrometric investigation of the water in the reactor’s pool and fuel-storage pool has been conducted. It was found that the main dose-forming radionuclide is 137Cs. 234U, 235U, 236U, 238U, 238Pu, 239–240Pu, and 241Pu have been found in the pool water, which indicates that the fuel matrix is present in its components. A reduction of the water level in the pool by 1 m increases the equivalent dose rate at a distance of 1 m from the edge of the pool by a factor of 2, which can be explained by the contribution of 137Cs settled on the wall of the storage pool. The efficiency with which the walls of the MR reactor’s storage pool are cleaned by a high-pressure jet of water and by mechanical means was investigated. The mechanical method of removing the deposits from the pool walls is most effective.
