Summary

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal Stromal tumours (GIST) are rare mesenchymal tumours, and usually present with bleeding, intestinal obstruction or abdominal symptoms such as pain and distension. Inguinal hernias however, are very common. Those that present atypically though should be investigated as they might have intestinal strangulation or may harbour an alternative pathology. METHODS: This is a description of a unique case report. RESULTS: We identified a patient who developed a GIST presenting as an irreducible groin hernia. CD 117 immunohistochemical staining of the tissue biopsy has confirmed the diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Indirect inguinal hernias are commonly seen in medical practice but on occasions tumours such as GIST may present in this way. This case clearly illustrates that an abdominal examination and surgical referral are essential in cases where the hernia presents with irreducibility or atypically.
