Background of the SiDRR Conference

The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes, historically shaped as early as the Han Dynasty of China, which interconnected the regions of the ancient world by widespread commercial ventures between 130 BCE–1453 CE. The Silk Road Economic Belt together with the twenty-first-century Maritime Silk Road, also known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), was proposed by the Chinese government in 2013 to call for cooperative economic, political, and cultural exchanges at a global level to revive the great prosperity of the ancient Silk Road. It will unite more than 60 countries and motivate more than 4.4 billion people (63% of the world population) (Liu 2015).
